Carolina Mountains offer Cheap Retreat
July 14, 2004 -- Looking for a quick get away that will leave your mind relaxed - and your wallet rested! Check out the River Falls Valley area of the appalachian mountains - 30 miles north of Greenville, SC - and 15 miles south of Hendersonville, NC.
This area has gained national reknown from the historical portrayal in the novel Gap Creek written by Robert Morgan. However, it is best known for its beautiful hiking trails, numerous waterfalls, and unique local fauna.
This valley is located aproximatly 30 miles north of Greenville in South Carolina and can be accessed from highways 25 and 276.
The community was formerly home to the River Falls hotel at the turn of the century, which was served by the Swamp Rabbit train bringing the well-to-do from Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville.
Visitors from the region and the state still continue to enjoy the many outdoor activities this area offers. From hiking to mountain biking, rock climbing to fishing - there is always more to explore. Cultural activities include the River Falls Lodge contradance, the Flat Rock Playhouse, Carl Sandburg House, numerous antique shops, and many fine dining opportunities.
The picturesque Gap Creek Baptist Church and Symmes Pretty Place Chapel are still favorite spots for worship and local weddings.
